MaryAnne Farnsworth was born in Ann Arbor, Michigan in 1944. She graduated from the University of Kentucky in 1965, and went to work for the U.S. Department of Labor (1966-1969), first as a systems analyst, and then as a management intern for the Manpower Administration.
